The Importance of Diesel Particulate Filters
Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are essential components in modern diesel engines, designed to capture and remove particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gases.
These filters play a crucial role in reducing soot emissions, contributing to improved air quality and compliance with stringent emissions regulations. DPFs are typically integrated into the exhaust system and work by trapping soot particles during the combustion process.
The operation of a DPF involves two primary phases: filtration and regeneration. During the filtration phase, exhaust gases pass through the filter, where soot particles are captured on the filter substrate. Over time, the accumulation of soot can lead to increased back pressure, which may affect engine performance. To counter this, the DPF undergoes a regeneration process, where the trapped soot is burned off at high temperatures, restoring the filter's effectiveness.
There are two main types of regeneration: passive and active. Passive regeneration occurs naturally during normal driving conditions…
